Students who are finishing Span. 3 are already well on their way to fluency. Have you ever stopped to consider that being bilingual in Spanish, however valuable in our current social and economic conditions, is the language of the "conquerers"? Remember that when the Americas were "discovered" Mesoamerica and the Valle Central de Mexico was perhaps the most populated place on Earth. They most certainly were not speaking Spanish. Scientists estimate that there are currently 7000 languages spoken in the world and predict that 1/2 will be extinct before the end of this century. Why? What does this mean? Humans express their unique view of the world through language. In this series the "Linguists" are searching for disappearing languages in Siberbia, Arizona, Bolivia and India. Watch the episodes and write a response. 1 hr video and 1 pg response will replace two days absences. Also watch the short 2-10 minute clips and incorporate these in to your response.
"The New Americans" We have been talking about immigration and the challenges that face immigrants who come to the U.S. We have focused on "desafíos y éxitos" and interviewed Spanish speakers about the challenges they have had to overcome. Read the "Meet the New Americans" and then complete "Take the Quiz". Write a 1 to 2 pg. summary of what you learned. Include reflections on the answers to the questions in the "Take the Quiz" section, especially the one's you were surprised to have answered incorrectly. 20 pts. maximum.
